Welcome new subscribers, loyal readers, family, and friends.
You have reached Stock Fiction.
There are ideal conditions for experiencing today’s story. If at all possible, please find relative quiet, view on a larger-than-a-phone sized screen, speakers up, minimal distractions.
If none of that is possible (because often it isn’t), you can just turn your phone on its side, view in “full screen” mode, and pop some earbuds in.
I’ll see you at the end. 💜
Thank you so much for watching Capture, a short film adaptation of a flash fiction story I wrote and immediately wished could exist in a different medium. If I had all the money, resources, and talent connections in the world, I would spend my life writing stories and turning them into stage or screen adaptations, just for kicks. Story performance is the ultimate show-don’t-tell vehicle, and it speaks to my personal style as a writer, which I attribute to my past lives as an actress, musician, director, and choreographer.
When I write a piece of fiction, whether it be a novel or a short story, I’m watching it. I’m listening to it. And I’m feeling it. If you’ve been reading me for a while, you know how much emphasis I put on action, dialogue, rhythm, and emotion. And how little I worry about world building, backstory, and beautiful language.
I make people talk so you learn about who they are.
I make people feel so you know what they’ve been through.
I create tension with space.
Syncopation.
With pauses.
And pith.
The film is only seven minutes long, but I spent hours making it. The script is only three hundred words, but I placed each of them strategically, timed each exchange of dialogue, image, piece of music, and sound effect with intention.
In short, I worked my butt off to make this.
And I truly hope you enjoyed it. 😇
Gif non sequitur incoming…
Earlier this week, yours truly and Stock Fiction were a featured stop on a scrumptious crusade lead by my “sister”,
. Birgitte pens dual Substacks, The Muse and The Cacao Muse, the latter of which is currently hosting a month-long virtual advent calendar of decadence, pairing Substack writers and their work with fantastic, ethically sourced, poetically named chocolate from around the world.Check out the post Birgitte wrote for me and be sure to visit The Cacao Muse and subscribe to learn about all things chocolate from a certified expert in the field!
This post is getting unruly, so I’ll just quickly mention for the whole lot of you who may have missed my December 1st announcement …
My book won a Watty Award!
While I did not overnight explode on Wattpad or get crowned YA Romance Queen in the aftermath of the awards ceremony, my book is getting reads, votes, hugs, kisses, lolz, and at least one person over there thought I was cool enough to interview.
🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Okay, they’re giving me the light, so I will sign off. You will hear from me one more time before the year is out.1 Then I guess I’d better get my goals in order for 2024.
Until then, a very merry everything to each and every one of you.
Yours truly and in fiction,
P.S. I would love to know what you thought of the film. Come talk to me…
P.P.S. I realized that my film adaptation is not 100% accessible. Here’s a transcript for anyone who needs it. Or for anyone who’s just curious about the original story that inspired the film.
Forever subscribers may receive a few additional words before Christmas. I just gotta write ‘em.
Loved having you onboard for the Holiday Tour Meg! Too much fun. I don't know what I'll do with myself after it ends. Actually, I do, but that's under wraps for now... :)
Bookmarking this to watch your film as soon as I have a moment. For anyone doubting what Meg says about how much time it takes to make a mere seven minutes of a video, take it from us production veterans. It's a bear. (or a Boss Cat)
Congratulations on the Watty.
