Thank you so much for watching Capture, a short film adaptation of a flash fiction story I wrote and immediately wished could exist in a different medium. If I had all the money, resources, and talent connections in the world, I would spend my life writing stories and turning them into stage or screen adaptations, just for kicks. Story performance is the ultimate show-don’t-tell vehicle, and it speaks to my personal style as a writer, which I attribute to my past lives as an actress, musician, director, and choreographer.
When I write a piece of fiction, whether it be a novel or a short story, I’m watching it. I’m listening to it. And I’m feeling it. If you’ve been reading me for a while, you know how much emphasis I put on action, dialogue, rhythm, and emotion. And how little I worry about world building, backstory, and beautiful language.
I make people talk so you learn about who they are.
I make people feel so you know what they’ve been through.
I create tension with space.
Syncopation.
With pauses.
And pith.
The film is only seven minutes long, but I spent hours making it. The script is only three hundred words, but I placed each of them strategically, timed each exchange of dialogue, image, piece of music, and sound effect with intention.
In short, I worked my butt off to make this.
And I truly hope you enjoyed it. 😇
I realize that my film adaptation is not 100% accessible. Here’s a transcript for anyone who needs it. Or for anyone who’s just curious about the original story that inspired the film.
NAILED IT. Wet eyes and everything.
Omg. Here’s a horror story. Kid says, “but I’m already asleep” and mom laughs and THEN SEES HER KID IN BED ASLEEP AND WTF HOW IS THERE TWO ALL OF A SUDDEN WHO IS TALKING TO HER AND WHO IS ASLEEP!
